Frannie est mariée à Bobby, un inspecteur de police, et mère d'un jeune garçon, Robert. Infirmière, elle pourrait couler des jours heureux auprès des siens si son époux n'était pas aussi agressif. Lasse de ses excès et perturbée par l'hospitalisation d'une amie, victime elle aussi des violences de son mari, Frannie décide de prendre contact avec une association de femmes battues. L'une des conseillères lui fait comprendre qu'elle ne pourra échapper à Bobby qu'en disparaissant. Frannie prend alors la décision de quitter le domicile conjugal avec Robert pour commencer une nouvelle vie.
